Local budgeting is in a total mess with county boards and city councils struggling to make ends meets. Without stimulus money to close budget gaps and with increasing mandates from state and federal governments, local taxing authorities are between a rock and a hard plave.
Here in Virginia, it has been a very difficult. For many years the state paid a 5% portion of teacher’s pension payments into the Virginia Retirement System. With the financial pinch at the state level, it has been left to local governments to make up that difference.
Now, we have individual local governments not only struggling with increasing costs from transportation to healthcare and books but they now have to make up that difference for teacher retirements. Of course, the teachers would like and deserve a pay increase, too. READ MORE
